How-to: Tumbler Bento

Lunch packed in a tumbler is fast gaining popularity in the bento world. How exciting! Thanks to Ochikeron-san, we can now learn how to prepare just that with her video and recipe.

Adapted directly from source with minor editing for clarity, follow these instructions:

Level of Difficulty: Very Easy
Time: 15min
Number of servings: 1
Main ingredient: 1 serving of steamed rice

Ingredients A: For chicken soboro

  • 75g (2.5 oz) ground chicken
  • 1/2 tbsp sake (omit this at will)
  • 1/2 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1/2 tsp sugar
  • 1/2 tsp grated ginger

Ingredients B: For scrambled eggs

  • 1 egg
  • 1 tbsp milk or soy milk
  • 1/2 tsp sugar
  • salt and cracked black pepper
  • sesame oil

Ingredients C: For green beans

  • 60g (2.1 oz) frozen green beans
  • 1/2 tsp soy sauce
  • 1/2 tbsp Katsuobushi (bonito flakes)

Cooking Instructions:

Chicken Soboro
Mix ingredients A. Heat a non-stick frying pan on medium-low and add the mixture. Stir constantly and let it simmer until the liquid is almost gone. Put aside.

Scrambled Eggs
Mix ingredients B. Heat sesame oil in the pan on medium-low heat and scramble the egg until it’s ready. Put aside.

Marinated Green Beans
Cut green beans diagonally and pan-fry them. Season with the rest of ingredients C and turn off the heat. Put aside.

Take turns scooping in the steamed rice as well as the 3 side dishes on top of each other into the tumbler. That’s it. Have fun trying!
